Altered Homestead Tour Schedule

Please be aware in planning that the 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. tours of the presidential Homestead will not be available on May 15, and 16, 2025, due to visiting education groups. The afternoon tours (2:00 and 3:00 p.m.) will be offered as scheduled.

Site Access

Be aware in your planning that I-40 in NC and I-26 in TN have been compromised due to the effects of Hurricane Helene. In addition, the Erwin Hwy (107) bridge leading into Greeneville was destroyed and is not expected to reopen until sometime in 2025.

Notice to travelers to National Cemetery

Due to the narrow roadway & tight turn, RVs, mobile homes, charter buses, delivery trucks, or vehicles with trailers are prohibited from the crest of Monument Hill. Check for information about parking at the Visitor Center upon your arrival.

Andrew Johnson Homestead

  • The Homestead is a two and a half story brick building in an ell shape. It sits right on the Main Street of Greeneville. It has a large back yard with spring and creek. There are double-decked side porches where tours begin at the back door.

Andrew Johnson National Cemetery

  • Monument Hill is a high hill that looks over the Appalachian Mountains and part of the town of Greeneville. The presidential burial plot sits atop the hill. The family is surrounded by veteran headstones from the Civil War to Afghanistan.

The Early Home

  • The Early Home is a two-story house with a one story ell and basement. It has a shingled roof and covered side porch. The house sits in a yard with brick path sidewalks. It sits with its front facing the street.

  • Andrew Johnson NHS Visitor Center
  • Begin your visit to the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site at the Visitor Center. Here you will receive orientation to the other parts of the park, in addition to general information, brochures, and directions. The Visitor Center houses the site's 13 1/2 minute film "Defender of the Constitution," the Presidential museum, Andrew Johnson's original Tailor Shop, and the Eastern National bookstore.
