Lookout Mountain Wildland Fire Prompts Closure of Mountain Beautiful Trail

Due to the effects of a wildland fire on the eastern slope of Lookout Mountain, the park's Mountain Beautiful Trail will remain closed until further notice.

America's National Parks Store - Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

  • America's National Parks Stores are located within the two park visitor centers, at Chickamauga Battlefield and at Lookout Mountain Battlefield. The store at Chickamauga is lined with bookshelves and kiosks, while the store at Lookout Mountain is integrated into the visitor center lobby. It has a few bookshelves and kiosks as well.

Brown's Ferry Federal Road

  • You are now standing in the gravel lot of the Brown's Ferry Federal Road Trace. There are small signs that denote original sections of the road. Waysides also provide additional information as you walk along the trail.

Chickamauga Battlefield Self-Guided Tour Introduction

  • You are now standing just outside Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center.

Cravens House

  • You are standing at the Cravens House, a large two-story, frame structure, with an almost entirely wrap around porch. To the right of the house is the stone dairy, completed in 1862.

Lookout Mountain Battlefield - Point Park Introduction

  • You are currently standing at the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center. Directly across the street is the large entrance gate to Point Park.

Moccasin Bend National Archeological District

  • You are now standing in a large open field, known as the Gateway Site, which is designed to be the entrance, or "gateway" to Moccasin Bend National Archeological District.

Orchard Knob

  • You are standing atop Orchard Knob, surrounded by US monuments and cannon. Chattanooga is to the west, Lookout Mountain is to the southwest, and Missionary Ridge is to the east.

Orchard Knob Walking Tour Introduction

  • Orchard Knob is a large grassy knoll, enclosed by a rock wall, with a paved walking path to the top. Large monuments, plaques, waysides, and cannon are located throughout Orchard Knob.

Point Park Tour Stop #1 - Entrance Gate

  • You are now looking at the entrance gate, which resembles a large castle with two turrets.

Point Park Tour Stop #2 - Parrott Gun Overlook

  • You are now standing between two large iron cannon that could fire a 20-pound shell. Looking off the mountain, you can see the city of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River below.

Point Park Tour Stop #3 - Garrity's Battery

  • Before you is a cast iron tablet and two 12-pounder bronze Napoleon cannon. The guns of Garrity's Battery overlook the city of Chattanooga and Chattanooga Valley, directly below you.

Point Park Tour Stop #4 - Western Overlook & Wauhatchie

  • You are now looking off the mountain to the west. In the distance is Raccoon Mountain and the Cumberland Plateau. Below you is Lookout Valley, where the Battle of Wauhatchie occurred.

Point Park Tour Stop #5 - Corput's Battery

  • You are now standing behind two 12-pounder Napoleon cannon at the site where Captain Max Van den Corput fired on US soldiers attacking the fog-enshrouded Lookout Mountain. Not much can be seen from this position except the wooded and rocky slopes of the mountain.

Point Park Tour Stop #6 - Ochs Museum and Observatory

Point Park Tour Stop #7 - The New York Peace Monument

  • Standing 95 feet tall, the New York Peace Monument is circular with bronze plaques of all the New York units' names that participated in the Chattanooga Campaign. Atop the shaft are bronze two soldiers, one US and one Confederate, shaking hands.

Signal Point

  • You are now standing at Signal Point. In front of you is an open wooded area, which leads to the brow of the mountain, overlooking the Tennessee River.

Tour Stop #1: Breckinridge's Assault

  • The tour stop is in a large, gravel parking lot, with four bronze Napoleon cannon, representing Slocumb's Louisiana Battery, pointing south.

Tour Stop #2: The Battle Line

  • You are now standing among US monuments to the United States Regular Infantry, which fought here during the Battle of Chickamauga.

Tour Stop #3: Mix-up in Union Command

  • You are currently standing in a relatively wooded area near the area where the Confederates broke through the US line.

Tour Stop #4: Confederate Breakthrough

  • The log house of the Brotherton family stands at Tour Stop #4, amid the open fields across which gray-clad Confederates charged in 1863.

Tour Stop #5: Viniard Field

  • You are now standing along LaFayette Road, surrounded by fields and trees. Dotting the landscape are numerous monuments commemorating the struggle that occurred at the Vinidard Farm.

Tour Stop #6: Lightning Strikes

  • You are now standing at the Wilder Brigade Monument, which is open seasonally for you to climb the circular staircase inside to get a bird's-eye view of this portion of Chickamauga Battlefield.

Tour Stop #7: Rout of the Union Right

  • You are currently standing in a large, open field through which the Confederates attacked US soldiers on prominent rise to the west.

Tour Stop #8: Horseshoe Ridge and Snodgrass Hill

  • You now stand atop Horseshoe Ridge, a wooded ridgeline pocked with numerous monuments where the US Army of the Cumberland made its final stand during Chickamauga.

Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center

  • Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center
  • The Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center is located at the north end of Chickamauga Battlefield. Inside are museum exhibits on the Battle of Chickamauga and Campaign for Chattanooga, as well as the Fuller Gun Collection. There is a bookstore administered by America's National Parks and an orientation film is shown every half hour. The Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30 am to 5 pm but is closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Chickamauga Battlefield Auto Tour

Throughout this tour, you will see monuments and memorials honoring those who fought here. You may also notice tablets, blue for US and red for Confederate, that describe the soldiers' actions; they date from around 1890. You can reach the major points of interest on the seven-mile auto tour. Most stops follow the battle's final day, September 20, 1863.

Orchard Knob Walking Tour

This walking tour will allow you to experience the assault on Orchard Knob, the first engagement of the Battles for Chattanooga, that took place on November 23, 1863. Please be aware that you will need to walk to the top of Orchard Knob for the majority of this tour. The route is paved, but we encourage you to watch your footing.

Point Park Walking Tour

Point Park, part of Lookout Mountain Battlefield, has six points of interested located inside. There is an entrance fee to Point Park.
