Visitor Center Alert

Visitor Center open ONLY Sunday and Monday 8:30am-4:00pm. Outdoor amenities (bathrooms, passport stamp station, drinking fountain) and grounds remain OPEN DAILY from sunrise to sunset.

Fort Bowie in Stage 2 fire restriction

Due to extreme drought, Fort Bowie is now under Stage 2 fire restrictions. All open flames and spark-producing devices without on/off switches are prohibited, including charcoal grills, fire rings, and outdoor smoking.

Butterfield Trail closed to horses and pack animals.

The trail remains open for hiking and foot traffic. For more information, see our policy page.

The story of Apache Pass and the events that led to the establishment of Fort Bowie are best understood via a 3-mile roundtrip hike from the trailhead on Apache Pass Road to the visitor center and Second Fort Ruins.
