Drive to petroglyph viewing trails: Boca Negra Canyon (open 8:30 am - 4 pm); Rinconada and Piedras Marcadas Canyons (open 8 am to 5 pm). The Volcanoes Day Use Area (no petroglyphs, open 9 am to 5 pm). WNPA Park Store open for shopping 9am - 4pm daily.

Bicycle Use In The Monument

Bicycles are ONLY allowed at the following locations: 1 - On the Boca Negra Canyon paved multiuse path; bicycles must remain on the paved bike path. 2 - On the crusher fine trail that winds in and out of the park around the mesa top above Boca Negra.

Attention Visitors, Cab drivers, Uber drivers, and transportation service drivers

DO NOT drop off your passengers at the visitor center. No trail access. Visitors must be driven to a trail system from the visitor center. If passengers want to go to the visitor center, WAIT FOR THEM in the parking lot until they come back out.

Vehicle Break-Ins: Take precautions to secure your vehicle and valuables.

This is an urban park. Don't hide valuables inside your car. Carry items with you on hike. Lock your vehicle and set car alarm. Recent auto break-ins at Rinconada Canyon parking lot. Report suspicious persons loitering/peeking in cars. Call 928-638-7805

Boca Negra

An Overview of Boca Negra Canyon in Petroglyph National Monument.

  • A concave shaped canyon in a surrounded by a volcanic basalt rock mesa. Petroglyphs of many designs cover many dark boulders that make up the escarpment. The interior of the canyon is covered with a sandy soil that has grass and several other plants growing out of it. Houses are visible surrounding the canyon. A paved road loops around the canyon starting from a fee booth. There are two parking lots at the trail heads and three trails leading off from there. There is a restroom building at one of the parking lots. Picnic pavilions are also visible.

Piedras Marcadas Canyon

An overview of Piedras Marcadas Canyon.

  • A long section of a volcanic mesa with dark basalt boulders covered in petroglyphs along the escarpment. A metal cable and post bordered trail goes through landscape that has sandy soil. Houses boarder the natural area.

Rinconada Canyon

An overview of Rinconada Canyon at Petroglyph National Monument.

  • A mile long canyon surrounded by a dark basalt volcanic mesa. There are many dark boulders covering the escarpment, some of which have petroglyphs pecked into the rock. There is a sandy soil with grasses and other plants growing from it. A trail leads away from the parking lot with metal posts and cables on either side of it. Powerlines cross the mouth of the canyon in a few locations.

  • Information only. There are no hiking trails at the visitor information center. The visitor information center is open 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily. It is located at the intersection of Unser Blvd. NW and Western Trail. From Interstate 40, take the Unser Blvd. exit (#154) and proceed north for 3 miles. GPS Lat: 35.1385 Long: -106.711 Park Store open 9-4. You must drive to a petroglyph viewing trail system from the visitor information center. They are located 2-6.5 miles away from the information center.
