Beaver Dam Creek Battlefield

  • A gently sloping grassy field leading to a small stream bordered by green vegetation. A large tree with leafy branches stands near the water on the left. In the background, a wooden footbridge crosses over the creek, connecting the grassy area to a dense forest of tall trees. The sky is partly visible through the treetops, with sunlight casting soft shadows across the lawn.

Chickahominy Bluff

  • A paved parking area surrounded by trees is situated at the top of a rise. The Mechanicsville Turnpike, an historic roadway, runs north past the site to cross the Chickahominy River. Dense vegetation largely obscures the view down the bluff toward the Chickahominy River and swamp below. Remnants of earthen trenches and fortifications are present among the trees at the edge of the hilltop.

Drewry's Bluff

In the spring of 1862, a Union flotilla of gunboats, including the famed USS Monitor, advanced up the James River, with only one Confederate fortification between them and the Confederate capital. The fate of Richmond lay in the hands of the defenders at Drewry's Bluff.

Gaines' Mill Battlefield - Confederate Position

  • A gravel pull off area beside a two-lane paved road, overlooking a large, open agricultural field, bordered by trees at the edges.

Gaines' Mill Battlefield - United States Position

  • A two-story wooden house, painted gray, in a clearing at the top of a hill. Bronze civil war cannons are positioned on either side of the house, facing south, toward a wooded area where the ground slopes down to a creek.

Glendale Battlefield and National Cemetery

  • A low, gray stone wall surrounds a six-and-a-half acre cemetery, lined with white marble gravestones. A small brick cemetery lodge, one-and-a-half stories tall, stands at the cemetery entrance. A two lane paved road runs north to south, with the cemetery on the east side and small private homes surrounded by forest on the west side.

Jimmie Pickett

Malvern Hill Battlefield

  • At the top of a gentle, sloping rise, six bronze Civil War cannons are arrayed in a line, facing north. The cannons overlook an open wheat field, with forest on its west, north, and eastern edges. A two-lane paved road runs north-south to the right of the field and cannons.

Willis Church Parsonage Ruins at Malvern Hill

  • The image shows the remains of a historic brick structure, known as the Willis Church Parsonage Ruins, set in a grassy clearing and surrounded by a wooden split-rail fence. Two tall, rectangular brick chimneys stand side-by-side, all that remains of the original parsonage building. The chimneys are weathered but intact, with visible brickwork and concrete patches where fireplaces once were. Behind the ruins, dense green trees line the edge of the clearing beneath a vibrant blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds.
