The St. Croix River is broader and wider than its upper reaches with forested edges and islands. Further downriver and closer to the mouth at the Mississippi, the river flows under large highway bridges and more signs of development can be seen.

The slope of the land is greatest over this 65-mile stretch of the St. Croix making fast water. Series of rapids and wide clear channels with forested river edges and river islands. Wildlife abound including bald eagle nests in white pine trees, beaver and bank lodges, and river otter.

The Namekagon River is a tame and narrow stretch of water flowing slowly to the west for 100 miles. Bordered mostly of thick vegetation and woody banks of aspen, birch, and maple, the cold-water stream is habitat for native trout. It is a clear shallow river about 1 to 2 feet deep and 75 feet wide with sandy bottoms. Numerous islands populate the river. Dragonflies and butterflies, otters, beavers, osprey and bald eagles are frequent sightings along the river stretch.
The park store carries a wide range of books and educational products for children and other Riverway memorabilia.
An open space inside the Namekagon River Visitor Center and St. Croix River Visitor Center, approximately 15 feet long by 12 feet wide, with wood and concrete walls support wood slatboards supporting books and gift items.
This facility is CLOSED. Hours of operation are Thursdays through Mondays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Memorial Day through Labor Day. When open, visitors can view exhibits, pick up park publications, Junior Ranger booklets, and maps, and watch the park movie. Park rangers staff an information counter and offer trip planning assistance for the Namekagon and upper St. Croix rivers. The visitor center is located near the Namekagon River off Highway 63 in Trego, Wisconsin.
The St. Croix River Visitor Center is OPEN. Hours of operation are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm daily including all federal holidays. The St. Croix River Visitor Center is open seasonally, from mid-April through October. When open, visitors can view exhibits, pick up park publications, Junior Ranger booklets, and maps, and view the park film. Park rangers offer trip planning assistance for the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers. The park headquarters offices are also located in this building along the St. Croix River.
