Visitor Center Hours and Tours of the Roosevelt Home

The Old Orchard Museum & Visitor Center is open from 1-4:30PM Thursday, and 12-4:30PM Friday-Sunday. The latest tour reservation information is available on recreation.gov. Tickets are $15 Adults, $1 Child, and $7.50 Seniors.

Eel Creek and Cold Spring Harbor

The nature trail leads to Eel Creek and Cold Spring Harbor on the east end of the site.

  • An open salt marsh with salt grass, a tidal creek, and gray colored footbridge extending to a dune area on the opposite bank. The dune area is grassy, sandy, and is sometimes flooded by high tide. Beyond the dune lies a pebble beach, with the open water of Cold Spring Harbor. To the east is the eastern shore of Lloyd Neck and to the north the Connecticut shore is visible across Long Island Sound.

Old Orchard

Old Orchard was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. Today, it serves as Sagamore Hill's Visitor Center and has exhibits on the life of President Theodore Roosevelt.

  • The Old Orchard House sits on four acres of Theodore Roosevelt's original estate in Oyster Bay, NY. It is in the northeast area of the estate. The house is a large Georgian-style brick home with white shutters. The area around the house has many apple and pear trees and the nature trailhead is located to the southwest.

A visit to Sagamore Hill is not complete without a visit to nearby historical and natural attractions, including the Village of Oyster Bay, Young's Cemetery (Roosevelt gravesite), Planting Fields, the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center, and numerous other parks, museums.

Roosevelt Home

Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, from 1885 until his death in 1919. The home served as the “Summer White House” during Roosevelt’s presidency.

  • A large three-story house atop a grassy hill. The home has high gables and is painted gray with red brick on the first story. A large porch wraps the western side of the home and overlooks a large open field running down to a road. There is a flagpole and gray memorial gravestone off the southwest corner of the porch. Various types of trees surround the home on three sides. Off the rear of the home, their is a small brick building with a cone shaped roof that was used as an ice house.

Sagamore Hill Garden

The Roosevelt's garden included plots for fruits, vegetables, and decorative flowers for display inside the home.

Sagamore Hill Nature Trail

The nature trail leads through woodlands to Eel Creek and Cold Spring Harbor. Visitors can see a variety of wildlife such as songbirds, herons, egrets, osprey, bald eagles, fiddler crabs, white-tail deer, and ducks depending on the season.

  • An eight foot wide wooded trail that leads downhill passing a small kettle pond and arriving at a bridge. Below the bridge is a tidal salt marsh. The bridge leads to a harbor beach. The trail then loops back through woods and ends at a large brick house.

Sagamore Hill Overview Exhibit

Located along the main walking path leading to the Roosevelt Home, this wayside exhibit shows an illustrated aerial depiction the buildings and fields of the Sagamore Hill property circa 1918. It serves as the first stop on the self-guided audio tour.

The wayside text reads: "This land around you had always been a working farm. When Theodore Roosevelt bought the property in 1880 it already included an Orchard, fields of corn, asparagus, and buckwheat as well as an old barn. After the purchase, Roosevelt had his own ideas of what the farm should look like and cleared about 47 acres, including pastures. With a garden, fields, orchard, pigs, cows, horses, and chickens the farm required a full time farm manager and several full and part time farmhands. Even the Roosevelt family had chores to do. Edith kept the farm books; The children tended their sections of the garden, pulled weeds, and brought in the milk; While Roosevelt loved to roll up his sleeves at haying time.

Sagamore Hill Pet Cemetery

Sagamore Hill's pet cemetery is the resting place of many of the Roosevelt family's cherished animal friends.

  • .A light colored stone with the words "Faithful friends" engraved along with the names of several Roosevelt pets. The stone is atop an embankment near the edge of the lawn under large trees and sits near a rose arbor archway with benches.

Tennis was a favorite pastime of the Roosevelt family during their time at Sagamore Hill.

Youngs Memorial Cemetery (134 Cove Rd, Oyster Bay, NY) is short drive or bike from Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, located approximately one and a half miles south of the park. A small, free gravel parking lot is available.

Sagamore Hill Self-Guided Grounds Walk

Explore the outdoors at Sagamore Hill! This tour features several stops of significance to the Roosevelt Family, such as the Roosevelt Home, the pet cemetery, Old Orchard, and the beach on Cold Spring Harbor. This tour is approximately 1.7 miles long and can take one or two hours to complete. Most of the paths are paved, with dirt sections on the carriage path and nature trail. The nature trail section, which begins adjacent to Old Orchard, has moderately steep sections and some beach walking.
