Accessible Scenic Overlook

Pueblo and Pithouse

Take a leisurely stroll on the loop portion of the Rim Trail. The combination of unexcavated structures and excavated pueblo and pithouse sites offer an introduction into the rich cultural history of Walnut Canyon.

  • A hardened dirt path runs between two structures. The area is surrounded by a mixture of juniper pinyon trees and ponderosa pine. Short clumps of grass emerge through a layer of black cinders on uneven terrain dotted with small boulders. The first structure on the left is built a few feet into the ground, there is a dirt floor, and a rock wall runs around the pit’s edges. The area is protected by a modern roof structure that shades the site. A do not enter sign sits in front of the structure. The two room Pueblo is only 35 feet from the pithouse structure. The fragile site stands about waist high with narrow doorways and a dirt floor. Additional walls and roofs are no longer present, eroded away with time. Its remaining limestone walls are the same taupe color of the nearby limestone cliffs of Walnut Canyon with visible mud mortar holding the walls together.
