One moment can change the fate of many nations. After thousands of years of habitation by the Cayuse Nation, life in the Columbia River Plateau begins to change rapidly with the influx of missionaries, newcomers from the Oregon Trail, and disease...
Two carts about four feet long, two feet wide, and four feet high with shelves. Books, stuffed animals, travel guides, National Park Service items, and other retail items sit on the shelves.
Whitman Mission National Historic Site was established to preserve and share the story of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman's religious mission to the Cayuse Nation in the early nineteenth century, along with its lasting impacts and continuing relevancy. The Whitman's established their religious mission at Waiilatpu on the Columbia Plateau. During the 1840s, the mission also served as a way-stop on the Oregon Trail.
The visitor center is housed in a low, irregularly shaped building with a flat roof, sitting in a grove of mature trees. The smooth walls are painted tan with dark brown trim. The area surrounding the building consists of pasture-like fields with tall grass and backed by woods.

The wide sidewalk leads to the entrance in the middle of the building. Restrooms are located on the outside wall to the right. There is a bench to the immediate right of the doorway, with a drinking fountain on the wall further to the right.

The doors open on the carpeted lobby space with the information desk along the back wall straight ahead, just past a glass case which holds a model of the surrounding area. The back wall is made of large windows giving a view of the fields and trees and the paved path leading to the mission foundations behind the visitor center.
The Whitman Mission Visitor Center includes a museum exhibit and a 25 minute park film. The hours below are for the Whitman Mission Visitor Center. If you are planning a trip, you can find seasonal hours and other exceptions listed at the bottom of this page. The park grounds and trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset.
